How to Emboss With Embossing Powder and a Heat Gun
Embellish your greeting cards and scrapbook pages by heat embossing your stamped images. When embossing power is heated with a heat gun, it melts and produces a raised image that adds dimension and texture to your art and craft work.
Things You'll Need
- Anti-static bag
- Card stock
- Rubber stamp
- Embossing ink or pigment-based ink pad
- Clean sheet of copy papaer
- Heat gun
- Small soft paintbrush
Instructions

1
Rub anti-static bag over card stock or brush anti-static powder over the card stock. This will prevent embossing powder from sticking where you don’t want it.
-
2
Place the card stock on the clean sheet of paper. Ink up rubber stamp and stamp the image on the card stock.

3
Sprinkle the embossing powder over the stamped image. Ensure the entire image is completely covered with embossing powder. You must apply the embossing powder before the ink dries, otherwise the powder will not stick. Embossing medium, such as VersaMark, and pigment inks dry slowly, giving you a little time to work. Dye-based inks dry quickly and are not good for embossing
-
4
Pick up the card stock and let the excess embossing powder that didn't stick to the stamped image drain onto the sheet of paper. Place the card stock to one side.
-
5
Use the paintbrush to brush off any stray flecks of embossing powder.
-
6
Pick up the sheet of paper with the excess embossing powder and slowly pour the unused powder back into the original container. Seal the embossing powder and restore it to its original location.
-
7
Retrieve the card stock with the stamped image. Melt the embossing powder by slowly moving the heat gun over the image, making sure all the powder has melted. It will change appearance as it melts, so you will be able to see when the image is completely embossed.

Tips & Warnings
Embossing ink is clear and you can use any color of embossing powder with it.
If you emboss with a colored ink, the embossing powder should be the same color or clear, because the ink color will show through.
If you have a particular color of dye-based ink that you would like to emboss, ink up the stamp with clear embossing ink, then immediately ink up the stamp with the dye ink. Stamp the image and apply clear embossing powder.
A dryer anti-static sheet can be used in place of an anti-static bag.
