How to Find Odd Uncommon Switch Plates

Often older homes have switch plates that have an uncommon set up, such as one outlet and two light switches. There was a time when phone jacks were also unusually shaped, such as round or oblong. When remodeling an older home and replacing the switch plates, it can be difficult to find the combination your outlet and switches require. Home improvement stores have a large selection of replacement switch plates, however, they will not have uncommon or odd switch plates on display.

1. First, check home improvement stores, such as Lowes, Home Depot or Harbor Freight, for the switch plate covers you need. Just because they do not have a plate on display, doesn't mean they won't be able to order it. Ask a sales associate for help. They will be able to tell you if the switch plate you need is available for order. Be prepared to pay a little extra for a special order switch plate cover.

2. If after checking retail stores, you are not able to find the uncommon or odd switch plate you need, go online. There are many specialty online stores for switch plate order. They will have a photo and description of the switch plate so you know what you are getting. Again, be prepared to pay more for special order switch plates from online stores. A few examples of online switch plate stores are: www.switchhits.com, www.switchplatesuperstore.com, etc. These online stores will allow you to chose a plate and then specify the configuration of the outlet. Keep in mind, when shopping online there will also be shipping charges with a purchase.

3. Finally, if you are in need of odd or uncommon switch plate cover and are interested in antique or unique switch plate, check local flea markets, antique stores or garage sales. Someone may be trying to get rid of a switch plate you are looking for are a low cost. Also, post on the wanted section on Craigslist or check eBay listings for uncommon switch plate covers. Remember not to give out personal information to someone you don't know from Craigslist and meet in a public, crowded place for a transaction.
