If your family is thinking about getting a new or your first cat, there are many important factors to consider so you get the correct one for your family. With these simple steps you will be able to determine which cat is the right cat to join your family.

It is highly recommended to think about visiting your local animal shelter. Animal shelters get many pets everyday and do their best to find homes for all the pets. With they become too crowded then are they are forced to put down some of the residents to make room for the new arrivals. Many owners of animal shelter pets say the pets are more loyal from being saved.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cat Litter
  • Food
  • Litter Pan
  • Cat Toys
  • Vet Visit
  1. Step 1

Determine what kind of a pet you would like for your household. There are all types of cats from looks, long hair to short hair, to behavior, very playful to lazy. Although it may be very difficult to find a white cat with gray spots, a ruff idea of what you would really like would be better.

  2. Step 2

If you have another pet already in the home, you will have to introduce the pets to make sure they will get along. If you can, take your pet along for the ride to meet the new pet. After you select your new pet ask to try to introduce the new pet to the old pet. If this is not possible, some places offer a trail period to make sure the pets will get along. Look into how to introduce pets at home. Pets need to be slowly introduced and heavily supervised until you are sure they can get along.

  3. Step 3

Take time to get to know the cat. Most places will give you an area to play and get to know the cat. Ask question to get to know the cat more. It is very hard to know everything about a cat in a few minutes, but the questions may help to answer any concerns you have.

  4. Step 4

If you have any problems making the cat unable to stay with your home, contact where you got the new cat from. Many will take the cat back and find it another new home. Some animal shelter will allow a trade to another pet that may be more suitable to your home.

Vets may also have suggestions that will help to solve the problem.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you are planning to get a new pet, don't forget about the money needed for food, toys, litter, and vet bills.
  • Any new pet should be checked by a vet before taking home to a household that already has a pet. There are some diseases and cold that can be spread easily from pet to pet. You don't want to harm your old pet from the new pet.

For step #4, give the situation lots of time. The transition may not be smooth immediately, depending on what the little one has been through before coming to you. Patience, affection and creativity!
