Keep chemicals away from your pets with organic flea control methods.

Many pet owners are plagued by fleas. These critters cause discomfort and illness for both cats and dogs. Many people balk at using chemicals to control fleas as they are concerned that the poisons will harm both their pets and children. There are several organic methods that you can use to help eliminate fleas from your pet’s fur, your home and your yard. Don’t use essential oils on cats as they are harmful to felines. Dogs can tolerate more than cats can.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Bathe your pet with a mild pet or baby shampoo. Soapy water kills fleas.

  2. Step 2

Comb your pet and pick the fleas off by hand. Throw the fleas in a bit of rubbing alcohol to kill them and then flush the mixture down the toilet.

  3. Step 3

Feed your pet Brewer’s yeast. This will cause harmless chemical changes in your pet’s blood and fleas will stop biting them. Buy it at pet stores and add it to your pet’s food. Use about a teaspoon for a cat and a tablespoon for a 50 pound dog.

  4. Step 4

Make a spray of juice of six lemons that have been steeped in half a quart of water for three hours. Spray it on your dog, but avoid using it on cats as they can become ill from too much citrus.

  5. Step 5

Add soapy water to a shallow dish and place it near a light. Fleas will be attracted to the warmth, jump into the water and be killed by the soap.

  6. Step 6

Wash your pet’s bedding often. Wash yours frequently as well if the pet sleeps with you.

  7. Step 7

Vacuum and shampoo the carpets in the home to get rid of both fleas and the eggs they lay.

  8. Step 8

Fleas dislike mint, pennyroyal and lavender. Make lavender and mint sachets and place them in your pet’s bedding or around where he or she frequents. Cedar chips are also said to repel fleas.

  9. Step 9

Keep your yard clean. Remove any debris like dead leaves and keep weeds and tall grasses under control so fleas will have less of a habitat.

  10. Step 10

Spread diatomaceous earth around your yard. This is made from crushed seashells and fleas don’t like it. Some also report success with using diatomaceous earth indoors as well.

  11. Step 11

Water your grass often because flea larvae can be killed with flooding.
