The value of your home can fluctuate regularly, and knowing your home's value can save you thousands of dollars. A casual estimate lets you know how your investment is faring in a changing housing market, while a professional assessment supports a tax appeal or your asking price when you consider selling the property. Consequently, finding the value of your home depends on how you plan to use the information. A few reliable methods will garner a casual or professional valuation.

      Contact the Appraisers Association of America, the American Society of Appraisers or the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers to locate a professional appraiser. The appraiser will perform a valuation of the property and completes a Uniform Residential Appraiser Report (URAR), which can cost up to $500. Make sure the appraiser is licensed or certified by your state and has several years of experience.

      Collect information relevant to the property such as the property address and real estate tax account number. Contact the county or municipal property taxing authority. State appraisers are required to value your property at 100 percent of the fair market value, according to the Washington State Department of Revenue. Call your state's secretary's office to request the phone number for the taxing authority.

      Research various online appraisal services. Several services, such as ElectronicAppraiser, the National Association of REALTORS or Zillow, offer online valuation reports. Some services, including ElectronicAppraiser, charge a fee of up to $30 for the service at the time of publication. Once you have settled on an online appraisal service, enter your home's address and zip code and click the "Submit" button. Complete the payment processing page, if necessary, to receive your report.
