To generate backspin you need to use a club with some loft such as a pitching wedge and contact the ball with a steep descending blow to squeeze the ball between the turf and club.

Creating maximum, ball stopping backspin is a matter of setup and contact.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • High Lofted Golf Club
  • Soft Golf Ball
  1. Step 1

Play the ball further back in your stance than normal. Placing the ball back will promote a steeper swing and encourage hitting down on the ball hard. 2-3 inches back in the stance than normal is sufficient.

  2. Step 2

Accelerate through the ball by making a shorter backswing and a longer through swing. The faster you accelerate through impact the more backspin the ball will have. A shorter backswing will encourage hitting through the shot without stopping or quitting.

  3. Step 3

Through impact, lead with the handle of the club. Do not allow the wrists to break down by allowing the club to pass the hands during impact. Leading with the hands and club handle will help to hit down on the ball, establish solid "clean" contact and increase the chances of striking the ball in the sweet spot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Through impact, maintain a flat left wrist. A flat wrist will prevent the club from passing the hands and will encourage squeezing to maximize the amount of backspin achieved.
