Install Drywall Ceilings
Install Drywall Ceilings

Whether you are replacing an old ceiling or installing a new ceiling for the first time. This how to guide will walk you through the step-by-step process. This project will require two people to position and place the drywall on the ceiling before it can be fasten to the joist. The most difficult part of the project will be taping the seams and applying joint compound. With a little practice this can be accomplished without too much difficulty.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2x4’s (For constructing 2 T-braces)
  • Drywall screws
  • 8” drywall knife
  • 4” drywall knife
  • Drywall tape (self-sticking fiber glass tape)
  • Joint Compound
  • Electric screwdriver
  • Utility knife
  • 4’x8’ sheets of ½” drywall
  • Measuring tape
  • Straight edge
  • Hammer & Nails (construct T-braces)
  • Dust mask
  1. Step 1

Construct two T-braces from 2x4’s. The top piece should be approximately 3 feet and the height should be just right for the upright 2x4 to hold the drywall against the joist. You can purchase 2x4’s in 8 or 10 foot lengths.

  2. Step 2

Install the drywall either across or lengthwise on the joist so that you have the minimum amount of joints.

  3. Step 3

Position your first sheet of drywall facing up with a person on each end holding it up. Using the T-braces, raise each end of the drywall into position.

  4. Step 4

Using an electric screwdriver, fasten the drywall to the joist using drywall screws; placing the drywall screws 6 inches apart on the joist. Be sure to counter-sink the screw heads so that they can be covered up later with joint compound. You want the screw heads only slightly below the drywall’s surface.

  5. Step 5

Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the entire room is completed.

  6. Step 6

When it comes time to cut drywall, it can be cut by using a sharp utility knife along a straightedge. After cutting one-side, turn over the drywall and bend it at the cut and finish the cut with the utility knife.

  7. Step 7

After all the drywall has been installed, tape all the joints using self-sticking fiber glass tape. This type of tape will speed up the taping.

  8. Step 8

Apply joint compound over the tape, using an 8” drywall knife. Remove any excess joint compound with the knife.

  9. Step 9

Using a 3” or 4” drywall knife, cover up all the drywall screws.

  10. Step 10

After the joint compound is completely dry, sand all the joints and screw holes using a drywall sanding block.

  11. Step 11

Reapply joint compound where needed and re-sand after it’s dry. The finish ceiling should be completely smooth with nothing showing.

  12. Step 12

Apply a good primer to the ceiling and then finish with ceiling paint of your choice.
