Step 1
Know the law in the state you are visiting. The American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation published a document in October 2009 that lists state and city laws restricting smoking rooms in hotels and motels in the United States. Some states, such as Wisconsin for instance, do not allow smoking in any hotel room in the state. So it is important to check on the regulations of your vacation city and state before searching any further.

Step 2
Search online. Sites such as Smokingwelcome.com list hotels and motels throughout the United States that allow smoking. While several of these sites feature incomplete lists (some allow users to add any hotel that they find), there are frequently several listings for major cities. Or, try hotel booking websites such as Hotels.com. Your hotel search will reveal whether available rooms are smoking or nonsmoking.

Step 3
Call. If Step 2 provided your hotel of choice, call the hotel itself to be sure that its policy has remained unchanged. If looking online wasn't very fruitful, call a few hotels in your vacation area. A good elimination technique is to start with large hotel chains. The Marriot, for example, does not allow smoking in any of its U.S. hotels so they can be ruled out. However, chains such as Doubletree feature smoking rooms in most of their hotels so you could tailor your search to this or similar chains.

Step 4
Make a reservation. Once you have found a suitable hotel, confirm that you are renting a smoking room when you make your reservation. Then, call back a day or so later just to be sure that the reservation you have made specifies a smoking room. Also, arrive in time to check in. Some hotels will not guarantee your agreed upon room if you arrive late.
