How to Clean Bed Sores

Bed sores occur when someone lies in bed in the same position long enough to create pressure sores. They usually occur on the legs, buttocks and back and can be extremely painful. Treat bed sores by repositioning the patient so that pressure is no longer placed on the particular point. Then keep the sores clean and free of dead skin so that they heal faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a cleansing solution by combining 2 cups of water and 2 or 3 tablespoons of table salt. Mix until dissolved and pour into a squeeze bottle with a closeable top, such as a rinsed-out dishwashing liquid bottle.

    • 2

Squeeze the salt-water solution all over the bed sore to clean it. Put a clean towel under the affected area to catch excess water and anything that drains from the sore.

    • 3

Cut a square of gauze that will completely cover the sore, with at least four layers. Wet the gauze in water and place it over the sore. Tape the gauze down and let dry.

    • 4

Advise your patient to take a mild painkiller such as ibuprofen about 30 to 60 minutes before the gauze is completely dry. Dead skin will stick to the gauze, which can be painful as the gauze is removed.

    • 5

Remove the tape holding the dry gauze to the skin. Carefully grasp the corner of the gauze and peel it away; the dead skin sticking to the gauze will peel away as well. Clean the sore again with the salt-water mixture, and dress again with dry gauze.
