How to Use Caulking for Fabric Image Transfers
Image transfer techniques allow you to transfer artwork, advertisements and even text to T-shirts, tote bags, wall hangings or other fabric items. Unlike appliquéd images, transferred images are transparent. You can layer images or add embellishments to create different effects. Clear latex caulking allows you to easily transfer almost any photocopied image. The technique is easy and inexpensive, so feel free to experiment with different images and fabrics.

1
Make a photocopy of the image your want to reproduce. Enlarge or shrink the image to the size you want the final product to be. Your image will transfer reversed, so keep this in mind when copying the image. Choose the reverse image setting on your printer to avoid words coming out backwards on your final product.

2
Apply a generous amount of caulk directly to the front of your image. Smooth it out with your fingers, a craft stick, a spoon or an old paint brush. The layer of caulk should be even across the image. Don't wet the image too much, or the paper will tear. The caulking should feel tacky to touch.

Lay the image caulk-side down on the fabric. Smooth it out, starting from the middle and working outward. Burnish the image, starting at the middle and working outward in circular motions. Press down hard, but be careful not to tear the paper.

Allow to dry several hours to overnight. Then peel off the paper. If the paper is hard to get off, apply a wet washcloth. Let the moisture soak into the paper a few minutes, and then it should peel off easily. Add any other images or embellishments you desire.

Tips & Warnings
Use the back of a spoon if you don't have a burnishing tool. Apply fabric or decorative layers onto the item you wish to decorate before you transfer your image. These layers will show through the transparent image.
While the technique works with both black-and-white and color copies, the caulking may change or muddy some colors.
