The valve cover gaskets on a Jaguar XJ8 help to seal the valve covers to the engine head. If the car starts leaking oil, this is usually one of the first seals to fail on the Jaguar. With two banks of engine cylinders, you'll need to change two valve cover gaskets. However, the process is relatively simple and straightforward.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove the nuts holding the valve cover to the engine head.

  2. Step 2

Pry the valve cover off the engine head with a flat-tip screwdriver.

  3. Step 3

Clean the mating surfaces on both the engine head and the valve cover. Make sure that you remove all of the old gasket material from both mating surfaces with a razor blade. Then wipe both mating surfaces clean with degreaser and a clean rag.

  4. Step 4

Apply a bead of RTV sealant to both mating surfaces.

  5. Step 5

Seat the gasket on top of the engine head. The gasket can only be oriented one way.

  6. Step 6

Press the valve cover to the gasket and thread and tighten the valve cover nuts.
