How to Install Race Seats in a Mustang
A number of aftermarket providers sell race seats and other performance accessories for Mustangs. Make sure you purchase them from a reputable company. This tutorial is primarily designed for Mustangs built between 1994 and 2004, although the steps will be similar for other year models. Swapping out the seats in your Mustang is an easy way to spruce up the car's interior.
Instructions
-
Removing the Factory Seats
-
1
Pop the hood and unhook your Mustang's negative battery cable.
-
2
Reach underneath the front of the seat and detach the electrical connector. Use the adjustment feature to slide the seat as far backward as it will go.
-
-
3
Remove the two retainer covers from the front seat track to access the mounting bolts. Once the bolts are removed, slide the seat as far forward as possible.
-
4
Remove the two retainer covers from the rear seat track. Remove the two mounting bolts.
-
5
Lift the factory seat and its hardware from the Mustang. Be careful not to scratch your interior panels and paint. Repeat the entire procedure to remove both seats.
Installing the Seats
-
6
Purchase the racing seats of your choice. Make sure the seats are compatible with your Mustang. Purchase the seat mounting kit from the same company to ensure compatibility.
-
7
Place the mounting brackets over the area your factory seats were mounted. Make sure the mounting holes on the brackets line up with the factory holes.
-
8
Turn the seats over to install the mounting brackets. It's much easier to install the brackets on the seat before putting them in the vehicle. Use the provided instructions as a guide; in general, you will need to attach the bracket with the provided bolts and screws. Standard tools will be necessary.
-
9
Place the new seats in the vehicle. Line the seat and mounting bracket up with the factory holes. Use the provided hardware to secure the seats to the floorboard. Repeat the procedure to install both seats.
-
10
Get in the seats and try them out. Move back and forth while in the seats to make sure they do not move or wiggle. If they do, further tighten the mounting bolts.
