How to Make a Homemade PVC Flag Pole for an RV
If you are traveling by recreational vehicle (RV), you may want to hang a flag from it to show your national, state, or even team pride. While you can purchase flag poles for your RV, it is easy to install one made with readily-available tools and a few bits of hardware.
Things You'll Need
- Pencil
- 1-foot long galvanized pipe with an inside diameter larger than 1 inch
- Drill
- 3/8-inch drill bit
- 3-inch long 3/8-inch bolt
- 3/8-inch nut
- 3/8-inch washer
- 6-foot length of 1-inch PVC Pipe
- 1-inch PVC cap
- Flag
- String
Instructions
-
-
1
Place the galvanized pipe against the RV where you would like hang the flag. Mark this location with the pencil.
-
2
Drill a hole through the galvanized pipe, about 2 inches from the bottom of the pipe. You should have two holes opposite one another, through which you will feed the bolt.
-
-
3
Drill a hole through the wall of the camper in the location you marked earlier.
-
4
Feed the bolt through the nut and washer, then the galvanized pipe, then into the wall of the trailer. Use the nut and the washer to tighten the bolt so the pipe is firmly attached to the side of the RV. This is the flag holder.
-
5
Place the cap on one end of the PVC pipe. This is the top of the flag pole.
-
6
Tie string through the grommeted attachment points on the flag. Tie the flag to the flag pole, and place the flag in the holder.

Tips & Warnings
Because the flag pole is only resting in its base, remove the pole when your vehicle is in motion to prevent losing the flag. If you are planning to attach more than one flag to the pole, it must carry more weight. Make sure you use a thick enough piece of PVC pipe, perhaps 1-1/2 to 2 inches, and use a longer and thicker piece of galvanized pipe for your base.
