Check that the battery is plugged in and charged if you cannot turn on the Nextel i870 cell phone or if it shuts down randomly. Pull the battery door on the i870 up and away from its body to reveal the battery compartment. Make sure the battery is clicked in place with its metal elements touching the metal elements on the phone itself.

Replace the battery door and charge the battery. Plug the thin, flat end of the Nextel charger cable into the bottom of the phone. Plug the other end into an electrical outlet. Leave the battery connected for four hours to fully charge the phone's lithium ion battery. Then disconnect from the charger cable and resume use.

Verify that the phone's Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card is inserted if the phone turns on but you cannot connect to the Nextel/Sprint cell network. Repeat Step 1 to open the phone's battery compartment. Pull the battery up to remove it and reveal the recessed SIM slot. Press the SIM card to ensure it is inserted securely. If there is no SIM card inserted, call Nextel's SIM customer service line toll-free at (800) 639-6111 to obtain a replacement. If the phone was originally used with another service provider, such as AT&T or Verizon, call the SIM customer service line and check that the current card is compatible with Nextel.

Make sure the Nextel i870 phone's keypad is not locked if the phone is on but not responding to your keypad controls. Unlock by pressing the middle button on the top of the keypad; then press the green "OK" button on the left. Change the keypad lock settings if you consistently encounter this problem. On the main screen, click "Settings" and select "Security." Scroll down to "Keypad Lock." Press "Auto Lock" to disengage the phone's automatic locking service or to change its settings.

Format your phone's memory card if you're experiencing problems writing to the memory card or accessing saved data. The card may have become corrupt and needs to be reformatted. Click "Settings" on the i870's main screen and select "Advanced." Click "Memory Card" and press "Format Card." Note that reformatting the card erases all previously saved data.
