Having a solid set of typing skills can be a valuable addition to a resume. With the use of computers and the Internet in just about any job field, it's beneficial for an employee to be well-learned in typing. While typing well and fast takes time, there is a process you can follow to help improve your skills, provided you have the basic knowledge.

Start by learning the proper placement of your fingers on the keyboard. A QWERTY keyboard has keys in traditional typewriter arrangement, with the letters Q, W, E, R, T and Y being the first six alphabetic characters. Your left index finger should be on the F key, and your right index finger should rest on the J key. Your remaining fingers should be resting comfortably on the keys to the left and right of the F and J keys.

Type for accuracy before speed. As you learn how to type, your fingers will develop a sort of muscle memory where they will be trained to hit keys almost effortlessly as you type. Of course, this takes time and practice, which is why it's important that you start with accuracy in mind.

    • 3

Begin typing for speed as you feel more comfortable with your understanding of your keyboard. Sites like TypingTest.com and FreeTypingGame.net offer free tests that will rate your words per minute.

    • 4

Play typing games and practice often, trying to beat your own high score each time, while making fewer and fewer errors. Don't look at the keyboard, this way you can learn the keys without having to turn away from the screen. Eventually you'll gain a feel for where the keys are, and will even be able to type with your eyes closed.

    • 5

Take your time and practice daily. Set aside a time each day to work on your typing and stick to it. Type whenever you have the chance. In instant-message conversations and e-mails, use proper grammar, capitalization, and punctuation to challenge yourself and keep your skills in check for when you need them for professional use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be patient. Like learning a musical instrument or a sport, typing takes time and practice.

  • Learn to sit properly while typing. This can reduce the risk of health issues, such as carpal tunnel, and can also increase your words per minute.
