How to Build a Fake Waterfall With Kids

Waterfalls are sometimes replicated indoors with water pumps, but the pumps can be difficult for young children to understand and operate safely. With a few basic materials, you can create an artificial waterfall with your children for their next craft project.

Things You'll Need

  • Blue food coloring
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 3 tbsp. baking soda
  • 8 oz. glass
  • 4 oz. glass
  • 2 feet of aluminum foil
  • 8 to 10 1-inch pebbles
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

    • 1

Preheat your glue gun, then glue the 1-inch pebbles onto your sheet of aluminum foil. The pebbles will give the appearance of the rocks in a natural waterfall. Allow the glue to dry completely.

    • 2

Place a 4-oz. glass upside down in an 8-oz. glass. Mix five drops of blue food coloring with baking soda and pour the mixture into the large glass.

    • 3

Cut the sheet of aluminum foil in half. Use part of it on the top rim of the glass to help direct the water so that it only flows out one side of the glass. Use the other half to cover the rest of the glass. You can crinkle the foil for a more textured look.

    • 4

Place the waterfall on a plastic-protected table. Pour the vinegar into the 8-oz. glass and watch the blue liquid flow down the glass and onto the table. Once the water finishes rushing down the waterfall, you can clean up or repeat the process using more vinegar, baking soda and food coloring.
