How to Make Sesame Chicken & White Rice

Sesame chicken got its name from the sesame seeds that garnish the dish. The dish comes from China. Prepare the ingredients by stir frying, a common Chinese cooking method. Stir frying uses a large, rounded pan called a wok to toss food in oil. Stir the food constantly to cover all the ingredients with any sauce or seasonings.   • * 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • * 2 tablespoons rice wine
  • * 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • * 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • * 1 dash hot pepper sauce
  • * 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • * 1 clove crushed garlic

  • 1 pound chicken thighs
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 ounces fresh mushrooms
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 4 green onions

Instructions

      Mix cornstarch, sherry, lemon juice, soy sauce, hot pepper sauce, ginger and garlic in a large bowl. This is the sauce. Cut all the vegetables into bite-sized pieces.

      Cut the chicken into small strips, about four to six inches long and one or two inches wide. Put the chicken in the bowl with the sauce and mix together. Cover with foil and refrigerate for about five hours.

      Dry fry sesame seeds in a wok over medium heat. When the seeds turn golden brown, pour them in a small bowl for later use.

      Pour sesame oil and vegetable oil into the wok. Pour slowly to avoid splattering since the wok will be hot. Heat for two to three minutes over low heat.

      Remove the chicken from the sauce with a slotted spoon and place in the wok. Cook until cooked all the way through. Take the chicken out and set in a bowl.

      Put the mushrooms and pepper inside the wok and stir fry for two or three minutes. Add scallions, cooked chicken and sauce and to the wok. Cook over medium heat for about three minutes. Sprinkle sesame seeds on the mixture and remove from heat. Turn off the burner.

      Boil two cups of water over medium heat. When the water reaches a boil, add the rice. Cook until the rice is tender and the water has absorbed. Put the rice on a plate. Put the sesame chicken on top of the rice and serve.

Tips & Warnings

  • Turn heat down if the oil pops out of the wok to prevent fires.
