How to Cure Male Jock Itch

Jock itch, or tinea cruris, is a fungus that thrives in moist areas like between the legs and genitals, according to the Mayo Clinic. Sufferers from jock itch have an itchy rash, peeling skin and cracking skin. Clothing, walking and sweating aggravate the condition. Treat jock itch at home with over-the-counter products unless a fever accompanies it. Jock itch is contagious; wash all towels and clothing that have been exposed to the fungus and avoid personal contact.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the affected area with a mild soap and warm water. Pat dry. Rinse the soap off and put the towel in the laundry to prevent the fungus from infecting others. Regular laundry soap and hot water remove the fungus.

    • 2

Wash hands to remove any bacteria. Additional bacteria can cause rash to worsen or infection in any open sores. Apply a thin layer of anti-fungal cream over the rash. The cream may cause slight stinging. Stinging goes away after a few seconds. Wash hands to remove fungus from the hands and prevent it from spreading.

    • 3

Wait about a minute for the cream to soak in. Apply powder to the affected area. The powder soaks up moisture and provides relief. Cooling powder provides the most relief, but any type works. Wear boxer shorts, which allow ventilation. Sweat makes jock itch worse.

    • 4

Wash hands thoroughly to wash off all powder and fungus contamination. Repeat two or three times a day until the rash is gone. If the rash doesn't go away after 14 days, call a doctor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid sexual contact until the jock itch completely disappears.
