Recessed lighting adds ambiance to any room. You can replace any ceiling light fixture when you learn how to install recessed lighting cans. Recessed lighting cans are lightweight and do not require joists to be secured. They have springs which clamp the can to the ceiling to secure the fixture in place.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drill
  • Reciprocating saw
  • 12/2 Romex wire
  • Wire strippers
  • Plastic wire nuts
  1. Step 1

Turn the circuit breaker off to the light fixture that is being removed. After the circuit breaker is turned off go into the attic and disconnect the wires from the junction box to the light fixture.

  2. Step 2

Remove the old light fixture from the ceiling from inside the room. Set the recessed lighting can against the ceiling where it is to be located and trace the diameter of the can with a pencil.

  3. Step 3

Drill a ½-inch hole in the center of the tracing on your ceiling. Check to make sure that there will be no obstructions when cutting the hole out.

  4. Step 4

Use a reciprocating saw to cut the hole out that you traced in the ceiling. Go back up to the attic and measure the distance from the junction box to the hole. Cut the 12/2 Romex wire to that length plus 12 inches

  5. Step 5

Use wire strippers to remove ¼-inch of the individual wire insulation from each end of the wire. Attach one end of the Romex wire to the terminals inside the junction box and run the other end out through the hole.

  6. Step 6

Go back into the room and insert the Romex wire through the recessed can junction box. Use plastic wire nuts to connect the Romex wires to the wires in the recessed can junction box. Tighten the clamp on the junction box to secure the Romex wire.

  7. Step 7

Insert the recessed can junction box into the ceiling hole and maneuver the recessed can into the opening. You will have to push up on the can and turn it back and forth until the springs pop over the ceiling.

  8. Step 8

Attach the baffle trim to the recessed lighting can. Depending on the manufacturer the baffle will either snap on or be secured using supplied screws.

  9. Step 9

Install a light bulb into the recessed can light fixture. Turn the circuit breaker back on to the fixture and test your light.
