How to Create Skins for an iPod Nano

Personalizing electronic devices has been around for a long time, and there are many who want to do it for their iPod Nano. The best way to do this is to use a "skin," which is a pattern, logo or design that is physically attached to the back of the iPod Nano. Making your own skin for an iPod Nano displays your individuality. It will not damage the way the iPod works in any way.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the iPod Nano face down on a clean cloth. Blow dust off the back of the iPod Nano using a camel's hair brush. Clean the back of the iPod Nano using a lint-free cloth.

    • 2

Measure the back of the iPod Nano using a ruler. Write down this information.

Run a graphic arts program on the computer and design or copy a design. Adjust the size of the design to the same dimensions as the back of the iPod Nano. Make a duplicate of the design so that there are two of them in the same graphics window.

    • 3

Put a piece of sticker paper into the inkjet printer's paper tray with the sticky side down. Turn on the printer. Print the designs from the graphics program so that they are both printed on the single sheet of sticker paper. Turn off the printer.

Take the sticker paper that has the designs on it and carefully cut around one of the designs with an Exacto knife. Repeat this process with the duplicated design that was also printed, so it is available as a backup should the first have a problem.

    • 5

Take one of the designs that has been cut out and remove the sticky backing. Carefully apply the design to the back of the iPod Nano, starting at the top of the Nano and working to its bottom. Smooth out the design with the edge of the cardboard. Pick up the iPod Nano to enjoy your new skin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Smoothing out the skin takes patience and a firm hand. Do the work under a strong light so you can see if there are any bumps that must be flattened.

  • Designs used for skins that you did not create could have copyrights attached to them. Be aware of whether the design is free for use or not.

  • Remnants of the adhesive used to hold the sticker to the back of the iPod Nano can remain on the back when the skin has been taken off. Scraping at the back to remove these remnants will scratch the back and therefore should be avoided.
