Even people without disabilities are susceptible to a fall in the shower. To avoid a broken tail bone, or worse, you can install a grab bar yourself. Determine where you want the grab bar to go and locate the studs in the wall. Using an electronic stud finder is the easiest way to find the studs.

Place the grab bar so the mounting bracket screw holes are on a stud. Mark the holes with a marker. Do this on both ends of the grab bar.

Drill the holes using a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the mounting screws that came with the grab bar. Make sure each hole goes into a stud. If you miss the stud on the first try, redrill that hole so it is in a stud. The mounting bracket plate will cover up any extra holes you drill.

Secure the grab bar to the wall using stainless steel screws that come with the grab bar. Place silicone in the holes before you insert the screws. This will keep the screws watertight.

Seal the mounting brackets with silicone. This will stop water from getting into the walls and causing damage.
