Twists are a fun and easy alternative to braiding. Some also find them less complicated to complete and more versatile in style than curls or braids. This style works great on curly or kinky hair that is either chemically treated or natural. Straighter, wavy and fine textures might have some trouble getting the style to hold, but can nonetheless benefit from this fuss-free style.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Apply a leave-in conditioner to clean, wet hair. If your hair is very straight at the root (mainly straight or wavy textures), flip your head over so that your hair hangs down. Use the pads of your fingers to scrunch the roots and create texture without tangling your hair. If your hair is kinky or curly, use a blow-dryer and a paddle brush to dry the hair. This will prevent shrinkage.

  2. Step 2

Part your hair into four equal sections. Use plastic hair clips to fasten three sections. Leave one section out to start with.

  3. Step 3

Apply a moisturizing cream to the section of hair left out if it is curly or kinky. If your hair is straight or wavy, apply a non-sticky mousse to this section.

  4. Step 4

Take a small section of hair (about 3/4") and separate it from the rest. Split that section into two equal pieces.

  5. Step 5

Loop one piece over the other piece, so that the hair looks like a ribbon. Continue twisting until you get to the very ends of the hair. If the hair is curly or kinky, twirl the end around your finger so that it curls. If your hair does not curl up on its own, use a tiny rubber band to fasten, or use a hair pin to fasten it to your scalp.

  6. Step 6

Twist each section of your hair until the entire head is complete. If your hair is shorter, fill a spray bottle with water and spritz the hair while pulling the twists down. You can wear your twists down, or in a ponytail for up to a week for a low-maintenance style. Or, let the twists dry before untwisting. This will transform your hair into beautiful, pencil-sized curls.

You can also play around with twist sizes, bigger or smaller.

  7. Step 7

Untwist the hair. Wash and condition as usual when you are ready to change your style.
