How to Fix Your Canon Copier
Whether you use your Canon copier at home or in the office, it pays to have some basic troubleshooting and repair skills. The cost of professional service and repair for an out-of-warranty copier can be quite high, so learning how to fix your own copier when something goes wrong can save you a lot of money.

Look at the control panel of your Canon copier and note any codes or error messages. Refer to the owner's manual or user guide that came with the copier for information about that particular error message. Each Canon copier uses a specific set of codes to notify operators of problems.

Shut down the Canon copier and unplug it. Allow the copier to cool down for at least 30 minutes, as the components inside the copier get very hot, and you could burn yourself while working inside the unit.

Open each of the paper trays and remove the paper. Examine the condition of the paper trays, looking specifically at the rollers inside the tray. Replace those rollers if they are worn smooth. The rollers inside the tray are designed to be user replaceable, and you can simply lift them out and snap new ones into place. Refer to your user guide for specific replacement instructions, as each copier model is slightly different.

Pull the front door of the Canon copier open and remove the toner cartridge. Set the toner cartridge aside while you clean the inside of the copier. Many problems with copier quality and paper jams are caused by dirt, debris and sticking labels inside the paper path.

Vacuum all accessible areas of the Canon copier. Use a small vacuum with a crevice attachment to clean the interior of the copier. Watch for sticking labels inside the copier. These labels can peel off during operation and cause issues with subsequent copies.

Again, these steps aren't meant to completely rid you of needing a technician's service OR to make you any sort of qualified service person, but to help you give your technician heads-up on what to expect before arriving. This will save you and the technician time spent on chasing parts.
Do not attempt to trip any sensors that would let you run the machine with the door open, for maintenance purposes or otherwise. Lasers, electricity, and driven components are all working within the copier and can cause injury or death if not treated with care.
