Many people are struggling with job losses and having to file for unemployment. It's important to file for unemployment as soon as you are laid off. Sometimes unemployment benefits can be delayed for several weeks.

In most states the maximum benefit period is 26 weeks. In some states with high unemployment rates, there is federal funding to extend benefits up to 13 weeks or more.

To file for unemployment, follow the steps below.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

File for unemployment by contacting your state unemployment office. The link to each state is located in the resource section below. Click on your state. In many states you can apply for unemployment online.

  2. Step 2

Make sure to have your employment and personal information ready. Most states require information about your most recent employer. Be ready to show recent pay-stubs, employer's address, telephone number and name of supervisor. You will also need your social security number and any paperwork received from your last employer.

  3. Step 3

To file for unemployment, be prepared to list the reason or reasons you lost your job. States require that you lost your job through no fault of your own; however, if you were terminated for cause, you should still file for unemployment. A state representative will make the final decision for unemployment benefits if you were terminated for cause.

  4. Step 4

Be prepared to show proof that you have been looking for employment during the time you are receiving unemployment benefits.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check your state's website for resources that will help you find another job.
  • If your unemployment claim is denied, you have a right to appeal.
  • Make sure to ask your former employer about continuing your health benefits.
  • Keep in mind that unemployment benefit amounts vary from state to state.
  • Never pay anyone to help you file for unemployment. There are a plethora of scam companies on the Internet promising to help people collect unemployment benefits.
