Metal detecting is a great hobby enjoyed by many people. Learn how to find the best places to search for lost treasures with a metal detector.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • metal detector
  • small shovel
  1. Step 1

Look in your own backyard. Many metal detecting enthusiasts will just grab their detector and head off in search of their treasures. Some of the best finds could be right under your nose. Backyards are a great place to look for lost coins and relics because children often played there and they are a gathering place for the previous homeowners.

  2. Step 2

Ask your neighbors and friends to search their properties. The only thing that they can tell you is no. Don't forget to always ask for permission when metal detecting someone else's yard. Offer to split the treasures you find with someone you ask to search their property. This is a great way to get people to give you permission to detect.

  3. Step 3

Search you public library for articles on historic events that have occured in your area. Old newspapers at the library can offer a great source of information to the metal detectorist looking for a spot to go hunt. Keep your eyes peeled for major gatherings in the area that have occured in the past. Where there where once people, they have most likely lost something you can find with your detector.

  4. Step 4

Ask longtime residents of your area to provide you clues as to where there were once buildings or structures that may no longer be there. Schools, churches, and other public buildings have over the years been torn down with no remnant of their existence. Locating these sites can be invaluable to a metal detecting enthusiast.
