Things You'll Need:
- a camera
- a kid
-
Step 1
My oldest son, Jack.Turn that camera around. Think about it. We are all built vertically, your child's face is basically vertical. When you are taking a picture of your child's beautiful face go vertical to capture more face in the frame and less empty, unimportant space, like the garbage can in the back ground.
Think about the best pictures and portraits you've seen, most are vertical. So turn that camera around and shoot vertically unless you have a whole gaggle of kids to photograph, then it's time to go horizontal. -
Step 2
Get close. That's right, move on in so you can see the beautiful details. With most cameras you can zoom in so take advantage of that feature. Unless they are in a Halloween costume, football uniform or something like that, it's the face you want, the eyes and mouth, that's where the expression and love are. Most of the time I really don't want to show off that dirty t-shirt I'm letting my son run around in, but his dirty face. ..I love that.
-
Step 3
Take a bunch of pictures. If you see a moment you want to keep, take at least five shots, quickly. If there's more than one person in the group, take even more because chances are one of them will yawn, burp, close their eyes or wander out of focus. So take a lot of pictures, especially if you have a digital camera. Then just delete the stuff you don't like.
If you take ten pictures of your child eating a pop cycle chances are one will be magical and the rest will be average so keep on clicking. -
Step 4
And finally, fall in love with your child's face. Right now I'm crazy about the little gap between my son's front teeth. And I know it will only be there till he gets some grown up teeth so I'm trying to capture that. My daughter Mary, has magnificent eyes so I spend a lot of time trying to capture their beauty and my oldest son has some crazy wacky tattoos that really capture his personality (He's got Max from Where the Wild Things Are on his shoulder). Fall in love and capture those features.
