Yarn Over
Yarn Over

In knitting, the Yarn Over, or YO as it is often abbreviated, is one of the simplest stitches to perform. It is a very easy way to increase stitches and it creates an opening or hole in the knitting. Here is the easiest way to understand how to create a yarn over.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Knitting needles
  1. Step 1

To begin, when you reach a point in your knitting that you want to create a hole or it calls for a Yarn Over, take the yarn and wrap it around the right needle (the needle in your right hand) counterclockwise from the back around to the front one time.

  2. Step 2

After you've wrapped the yarn around the right needle as described in step 1, begin your next stitch as you normally would and then continue on.

  3. Step 3

When you reach your yarn over on the next row, treat it as normal stitch to create the hole on the previous row. That's it!

Tips & Warnings
  • To make sure your yarn over is correct, when you wrap the yarn around your right hand needle, the yarn on the underside should be going towards your left and when you wrap it over the top it should be going back out to the right. This creates the "counterclockwise" motion necessary for the yarn over.
