How to Earn The Respect Of Your Child
It can be challenging in this day and age to teach your child to respect you. So many times they see other children acting out and being disrespectful and they think that it is o.k. There are ways to teach your child that this is not the way to treat others.

I know this may be an old saying but that does not make it any less true, "to get respect, you must give respect". Your child watches every thing you do, so make sure that you are respectful to others. Always show good manners and say thank you and please. If you don't do this, they won't do it either.

To teach your child to listen and not interrupt when others are talking you must show them the same respect. Don't treat them as if what they have to say isn't important or worth your time. I actually saw a parent ignoring her child's request to use the restroom repeatedly saying "be quite, adults are speaking" until the child wet her pants. The mother then proceeded to berate and scold the child. What lesson did the child learn? That it is o.k. for adults to be rude and disrespectful?

Don't lie to your child. That is the fastest way to lose their respect and trust. Don't treat your child as if they don't have any intelligence. They may not be an adult but if they are eight they don't want to be talked down to like they are two. Kids are smarter than most people think and will not take you serious if you aren't sincere.

If you give and show respect in every area of your life your child will pick up on this and respond in kind.
