The first and most important step in doing well in college classes is actually attending class. Too many freedom-seeking freshman can't control their new found world and fail to attend class. This not only wastes time and money but will ultimately cause you to fail. Attending classes also allows you to capitalize on pop quizzes aimed at helping out attending students.

Make sure the professor notices you. I know this can be tough with a classroom of 100+ students but do your best. Sit up front and definitely attend any after class study groups the professor provides. Those are the best. The professor will get to see that you are actually trying and this goes a long way in the leniency a professor will give you while grading your tests.

Always. I repeat always do any extra credit work that a professor gives out. This is a free pass that requires only a little work and again proves to a professor that you are their to learn and work hard. Most professors understand that learning is more perspiration than inspiration.
