How to Choose The Best PC Cleaner Tools

Over time, your computer collects unnecessary content such as temporary files, system logs, crash dump files, browser cookies, lists of recently opened files and more. These files may consume a considerable portion of your hard drive, limiting the available space for the files that you want such as music, movies and other media. A PC cleaner utility can resolve this by searching for and deleting these files. Select the best utility for your needs by considering the typical features of this software category and deciding which features are most essential for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the type of PC cleaner that you want to use. Some cleaning utilities search the computer for unnecessary files to delete for reclaiming hard drive space, while some also scan the Windows registry for unnecessary entries to delete. Although opinions differ about the benefit of registry cleaners, a good cleaning utility should be able to find and remove many unnecessary files.

    • 2

Look for a cleaner with the ability to create an automatic registry backup if you use the utility to clean the Windows registry. In rare cases, an automatic registry cleaner may remove a registry entry that causes Windows to become unstable or perform in an abnormal manner. If this happens, you should be able to restore the registry from a backup immediately.

    • 3

Look for a PC cleaning utility with the ability to detect unnecessary files created by third-party programs. A program that only removes cache and temporary files for Internet Explorer has limited value if you prefer Chrome, Firefox or Safari. Many other third-party programs such as media players and file sharing programs also create temporary files that consume hard drive space unnecessarily.

    • 4

Look for a cleaning utility with a secure delete option if you are concerned about the possibility of someone using file recovery software to find your deleted files. A secure delete option overwrites files several times with random data to prevent them from being recovered.

    • 5

Look for a cleaning utility that gives you an overview of the content that it will delete before deleting it. You should be able to read a summary of the different file types, associated programs and locations on your hard drive where unnecessary files were found. This gives you an opportunity to make sure that you do not need the files before deleting them.
