A road trip can be fun, but it often takes some planning to make sure that it remains enjoyable. When planning a road trip, one of the most important pieces of information you will want to know is the time that you will need to allot for travel. The process of calculating the round trip time involves gathering some data and performing a couple of simple calculations.

Determine the distance in miles for the round trip you will be taking. We will call this value "D". Refer to a road trip or atlas for the mileage between your starting and finishing point.

Determine the speed in miles per hour at which you will be traveling during your trip. We will call this value "S".

Plan the number of breaks you will take on your trip and the time for each. Add these times together to get the total break time. Convert this time to hours if you have not already done so. Do this by dividing the total time in minutes by 60. We will call this value "B".

Substitute the values obtained in the above steps in to the following equation,
T = (D/S)+B
where T = the round trip time.
The equation reads as the round trip time equals the quantity of D divided by S, plus B.
