1
Wash and condition the hair. Leave the conditioner to sit on the hair for about two minutes. Repeat the process if desired.
-
2
Comb and towel dry the hair. Pat hair dry with a towel, leaving it a little damp. Hair is easier to work with and set when it is damp. For a less intense look, dry the hair thoroughly.

3
Work a generous amount of maximum hold hair gel through the hair. Be sure to coat the entire head and length of your hair. Spiking hair requires a lot of styling product, so the more gel the better.
-
4
Separate sections of hair to spike. These sections can be as large or small as you like, depending on the look you are going for. For a messy look, pull random sections of hair with your fingers. For a more edgy, finished look, part sections of hair in geometric shapes with a comb.
-
5
Pull each section away from the scalp, shaping the ends of the hair into a point one section at a time. The gel should hold the spike, but for longer hair or a hairstyle that will last longer, coat the spike with spiking glue. Repeat this process until the entire head is complete.
-
6
Spray a coating of hair spray over the entire head. This will help to reinforce the spikes and provide a longer lasting support.
