How to Lay Cinder Block
When building a project it will vary on the type of bricks you will need to use. For instance, if you are working on foundation, a large wall, or an outside fireplace it is best to use cinder blocks. These are large bricks that look like solid concrete, but are not. They are made partly of concrete and sand or gravel. Cinder blocks are also known as concrete or breeze blocks. These blocks have large hollow spaces that provide insulation and are easier to handle than heavier concrete blocks. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Prepare cement. Determine how much cement you will need to lay the cinder blocks. First you will need to lay the foundation where the cinder blocks will sit. The foundation should be twice as wide as the cinder blocks and the depth should be twice the blocks' thickness. Use a level to make sure that the foundation is level.
-
2
Wait for the cement to dry. Then lay out the cinder blocks without using any mortar to determine how many you will need on each row. Start at a corner first. This will help keep the blocks even and level. Once the amount is determined, remove the blocks.

3
Prepare mortar, but avoid mixing too much. Mortar can dry up within an hour and will need to remain covered especially during hot days. Use a trowel to spread a layer of mortar on the foundation. Start with the corner and begin to lay down the first row of cinder blocks. Pour cement inside each of the holes of the cinder blocks.

4
Adjust the cinder blocks as needed. Use the level to determine if the blocks are in perfect alignment. Adjust the blocks before the mortar and cement dry. Place mortar of 1/8-inch thick between each block.

5
Spread a layer of mortar on the edges of the cinder blocks. Begin with the corner once again and lay down the second row of blocks. Alternate the vertical joints. Make sure that the joints of the cinder blocks on the first row does not line up with the second row. One way to do this is to use alternate sizes of corner blocks. For example, the first row can have a 4-inch corner block while the second row has an 8-inch. Make sure to add more cement into the holes of the blocks in the second row.

6
Use a level to make sure that the second row of cinder blocks is aligned. Adjust the row as needed. Continue laying the rest of the cinder blocks until the object is done, then wait for the cement and mortar to dry.

Tips & Warnings
Always start with the corners to make sure that the cinder blocks are arranged evenly. Cut the blocks if needed to make sure that they fit correctly.
