How to Combine Different Baby Formulas
At some point in time you may have to switch baby formulas. It is important that you do not make an immediate change unless your baby has a health problem that warrants a quick change. Instead, you should gradually combine different baby formulas by phasing one out and adding the other in. In doing this, you will reduce the risk of stomach upset in your infant. If you are switching from a milk-based formula to a soy formula, be sure to discuss it with your child's doctor beforehand. The switch might not be in the best interest of your baby.

Combining Different Baby Formulas
-
1
Read the directions on the formula labels so you know how much formula you will need to add to the water. Typically it is one scoop per 2 oz. of water, but many specialty formulas such as Neocate require one scoop per 1 oz. of water.

2
Start with the formula that your baby has been drinking. If he has been drinking a 6-oz. bottle, put 6 oz. of water into the bottle. Add enough of the original formula to make 4 oz. of that formula and then add the amount required to make 2 oz. of the new formula. The combination of these two baby formulas should equal a 6-oz. bottle. Use this combination for one day.

The next day, take the 6 oz. of water and add enough of the original formula to equal 2 oz. and then add 4 oz. of the new formula. Do this for every bottle that day. If your baby does not like the taste and refuses to drink this combination of formulas, go back to the mixture of the previous day and try this step again the next day.

On the third day you should be able to have completely switched over to the new formula. Since you had combined the different baby formulas on the previous days, your baby should not notice that much of a difference in the taste and take to the new formula without any problem. If she refuses to take it, repeat the previous step until she is willing to take a bottle without the baby formulas being combined. If she develops an upset stomach with the new formula, be sure to contact your pediatrician as soon as possible.
