How to Use Windows XP Recovery Console

The Recovery Console can be run from a Windows XP startup disk or a Windows XP CD-ROM. The Windows Recovery Console has an independent command prompt from the Windows operating system. In order to enter the Recovery Console interpreter, you must be able to provide an administrative password. If needed, you can press the F6 key during the Recovery Console's setup to administer third-party drivers to access your hard drive.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Insert the Windows XP startup disk or XP CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.

  2. Step 2

    Reboot your computer.

  3. Step 3

    Press the "R" key when you see the Welcome to Setup screen. This starts the Recovery Console.

  4. Step 4

    Type in the administrative password when prompted. The Recovery Console command prompt will appear.

  5. Step 5

    Type in the appropriate commands to repair or diagnose your computer. To find a list of the various commands that the Recovery Console has to offer; type "help" at the command prompt.

  6. Step 6

    Type "exit" to leave the Recovery Console and reboot your computer.
