How to Change Powerstroke Glow Plugs

Glow plugs are used in diesel engines in place of spark plugs. The Powerstroke diesel engine, produced by the Ford Motor Company, uses glow plugs. After roughly 30,000 miles, you will probably need to replace the plugs. Access to the plugs is easiest from the front of the vehicle. There are two banks of cylinders, one on each side of the engine. When you notice that it becomes increasingly difficult to start your Powerstroke engine, you'll need to change the glow plugs. You should change all of the glow plugs when it is time to change them. However, when changing the plugs, only work on one plug at a time.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the plug wire running to one of the engine cylinders. Pull the plug end out of the engine. There is nothing holding it in place, so you should be able to just pull it off the top of the engine.

    • 2

Attach the socket extension and plug socket to the socket wrench and lower the socket down into the plug well, from where you just removed the wire.

    • 3

Orient the wrench until you feel the socket "grab" onto the end of the glow plug.

    • 4

Turn the plug counterclockwise to loosen and remove. Pull the plug out of the engine, along with the socket wrench and plug socket.

    • 5

Install the new glow plug. Installation is the exact reverse of the removal process.
