From beginning to end, tarps are useful for any camper. There are many equipment choices for camping, but this versatile piece should definitely make the list. You don't have to go to a specialty store to find a tarp. Most discount stores carry them in their camping section. They provide cover for equipment while traveling, protection for your tent and makeshift shelters. Tarps are definitely a "don't leave home without it" piece of equipment for campers.

Things You'll Need:

    Tent Floor Protection

  1. Step 1

Lay on the ground a folded tarp that it is just slightly smaller than the floor dimensions of your tent. This will provide protection for the tent floor from any debris that could not be cleared away as well as an extra ground water barrier.

  2. Step 2

Lay your tent out for setup directly over the tarp footprint you have laid out.

  3. Step 3

Erect your tent. Make sure the tent stakes clear the tarp when you secure the tent to the ground.

  4. Step 4

Lay a small tarp in front of the tent's doorway. This will give a place to remove your shoes and will keep debris outside the tent as well as giving a dry, clean place for your bare feet.

  5. Tarp Covering

  6. Step 1

Tie securely a length of rope between two trees high above the area you want covered.

  7. Step 2

Pull the tarp up and over the line until half of the tarp is on each side of the rope.

  8. Step 3

Secure lengths of rope to two or three eyelets on each side of the tarp that hangs from the line.

  9. Step 4

With the tarp pulled taunt toward the ground at a 45-degree angle, hammer stakes, usually two or three, through the small rope loops first on one side, then the other. These guy lines help stabilize the tarp.

  10. Step 5

Place inside the tarp covering your table or chairs. A hammock strung between the two trees can even make the whole thing a makeshift tent.

Tips & Warnings
  • A variety of tarp sizes will help to get the most use out of them.
  • Do not secure hanging tarps to the tent. High winds can take down the tarps and anything attached to them.
