1
Clean your cabinets thoroughly and remove any garbage or old food. If you can move most of the food in the cabinet where the rats have been to another storage area, you should until the rat problem stops.
-
2
Maintain your yard and area outside near your kitchen so that rats can't get into your house. Remove any garbage around your yard and try stacking firewood at least 18 inches high near the kitchen side of your house.

3
Cover any openings in your house and on the outside of your kitchen. Also, cut down any tree branches that reach over the roof of your house so that the rats can't enter from a chimney or vent on your roof.

Keep your kitchen sink clean and make sure there is no food in your garbage disposal. You can also stop the rats from entering your sewer piper and then getting into your cupboards by pouring 1 cup bleach down the drain with boiling water. Also, don't pour grease down your drain.

Place a cheap snapping rat trap from your local hardware store. Attach raw bacon or apples to the rat trap and carefully place it where you found rat droppings. Dispose of the rat outside and away from your house immediately after it's trapped.
