How to Donate Old Military Uniforms

When you leave the military, you take all the uniforms you wore throughout your service with you. If you do not plan to re-enlist, you may not have any further use for the uniforms and may want to look into selling or donating the uniforms. Not only can you free up closet space, but you can claim a tax write-off as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your commanding officer if you are being discharged and ask what you are allowed to donate. If the uniforms you own are from relatives who served in the armed forces in previous decades, it is all right to donate them.

    • 2

Go to any Salvation Army or Goodwill store. These stores will take your uniforms from you and, if you ask, write you a receipt for the clothing you donated.

    • 3

Look into an army PX or military surplus store. These stores carry older military gear, ranging from World War II to the war in Iraq. At these stores you will either be able to donate your uniforms or receive money for them.

    • 4

Contact a military museum. There are military museums throughout the country showcasing the evolution of many types of uniforms. These facilities are usually happy to accept donations. All branches of the military have their own specific museums, such as the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Air Force and Army.
