How to Play Tuning Forks
Tuning forks are most commonly used to tune musical instruments, such as guitars, basses or pianos. Each tuning fork is designed to precisely play a specific pitch. This note is used as a reference pitch that the tuned instrument should match. Tuning forks are also used in the scientific, medical and electronics fields. Playing a tuning fork requires practice to consistently produce a good reference pitch. It is also important to avoid damaging the tuning fork during use.
Instructions
-
-
1
Choose a tuning fork for the reference pitch you wish to produce. Each tuning fork will only play one note.
-
2
Check the tuning fork for any cracks or dents. The tuning fork will not produce the correct note if either is present.
-
-
3
Hold the tuning fork by the stem. The stem is the part of the tuning fork with a ball at the end. Avoid touching the tines, the two parallel poles at the top of the tuning fork.
-
4
Hit the tines of the tuning fork against a hard surface.
-
5
Place the ball end near your ear to hear the reference pitch played by the tuning fork.

Tips & Warnings
Avoid hitting the tuning fork against an abrasive surface to play it. This can potentially damage the tuning fork. Tuning forks are very precisely built to produce the correct reference pitch. Any damage will cause the tuning fork to play the wrong note.
