How to Access WI Fi

Wi-Fi is a popular networking technology that allows users to connect wirelessly to the Internet and other Wi-Fi enabled networks. Wi-Fi works over a radio frequency and requires two components, a wireless adapter and a wireless router, to create a connection. Many devices, such as cell phones, laptops and game consoles contain built-in wireless adapters. The adapter automatically detects wireless networks that are within range.

Instructions

    • 1

Power on the device that you want to use to connect to the Wi-Fi network.

    • 2

Enable Wi-Fi access on the device, if it is not automatically enabled. Consult the instruction manual for your specific device if you are not sure how to do so. Most Wi-Fi enabled laptops will be automatically enabled. If yours isn't, click "Start" and "Control Panel." Click "Network Connections" and then right-click "Wireless Network Connection" and select "Enable."

    • 3

View the available wireless networks. Networks that you are close enough to connect to will appear in a list. Open networks will usually include the text "Unsecured wireless network" or something similar below the network name. Secured networks will be denoted by a lock icon or the text "Security-enabled wireless network."

Connect to the desired network. Your device may automatically connect to an unsecured network, or to a secured network that it has connected to previously; if that is the case, then you don't need to do anything else. To connect manually, select the network from the list. If it is a secured network, enter the password to complete the connection.
