How to Find Cheap Hotels in Rome
Rome is a year-round tourist destination which means that there isn't a true low season in Rome for more cheaply priced hotels. Rome is not a compact city, unlike many other European cities, so it is difficult to find a cheap hotel which is an ideal base to visit all of Rome's tourist attractions; most visitors to Rome use centro storico (the historic center) as a base and, with a little bit of research, it is possible to find hotels in Rome from as little as 45 euros per night, depending on location and season.

Searching the Internet to Find Cheap Hotels in Rome
-
1
Use the internet to search for cheap hotels in Rome. There are many hotel booking services for booking cheap hotels in Rome, including the EuroCheapo website, who have personally researched cheap hotels in central Rome locations; some hotels give on line discounts for advance hotel bookings prior to travel, such as Hotel2Stay, a hotel booking web service who buy hotel rooms in bulk and negotiate special rates with individual hotels in Rome.
-
2
Use a guidebook to Rome and/or Italy, such as Lonely Planet Italy, Frommers Rome or Fodors Rome, to verify the exact location of the hotel in Rome (online versions of these guidebooks or part sections are also available). Hotels located to the west of Stazione Termini, Rome's central transport hub, should be treated with caution as this area can be unsafe at night.

3
Read reviews of Rome hotels posted by previous travelers to Rome on travel web sites, such as TripAdvisor and Expedia, to learn what is included in the price and how good it is. Hotel rooms in Rome are a lot smaller than most American hotel rooms; some Italian hotels include breakfast, others don't.

4
Check the availability of the hotel on more than one website as many on line hotel booking services offer the same hotel at different rates, due to special rates negotiated by individual hotel booking services; examples of exclusive Rome hotel booking websites include Rome Hotel Service and BookHotelsInRome (who do not require payment until arrival at the hotel in Rome and have no cancellation charges).

Cheap hotels in Rome can still be found on arrival in Rome, although availability may be limited. Enjoy Rome, located on Via Marghera 8A, close to Stazione Termini, will help book cheaper end hotel accommodation in Rome for free; Enjoy Rome is operated by an English speaking couple who also have a web site.

Tips & Warnings
It is often possible to find cheap hotels in Rome in July and August, as many Italians take vacations away from the city in July and August, or in the winter months (excluding Christmas and New Year) when business is slower.
If booking on line, make sure that the hotel is booked through a reputable on line hotel web site and through a secure on line server. If booking a hotel on arrival in Rome, do not be tempted by cheap deals from people who frequent the Stazione Termini, or any other public place, as these deals often turn out to be scams.
