How to Make a Guitar Stand Out of Wood

How to Make a Guitar Stand Out of Wood thumbnail
This simple guitar rack takes about an hour to make.

This simple to build wooden guitar stand folds flat and can be built out of a 4x4 sheet of half or quarter inch plywood with a few basic tools. It can be adjusted to any size guitar and if built wide enough, can accommodate multiple thicknesses from a flat bodied electric to a full bodied flat top. Painted or stained and varnished it looks very nice sitting in a corner of the stage.

Instructions

  1. Quick and Easy Guitar Rack

    • 1
Mark out the pattern on a 4x4 sheet of plywood.

Measure your guitar from the base to base of the headstock above the neck. Draw the pattern shown on the sheet of plywood with a straightedge and marker. Make the frame halves as tall as the distance you measured. Make the space between the upright and the upturn at the end of the base arms at least 10 inches. It can be shorter if you're only racking solid bodied electric guitars.

    • 2
      Cut out the pieces.

Cut out the pieces you marked from the plywood, then sand and paint or stain and varnish the pieces. Place the pieces back to back.

    • 3
Screw the hinges between the two halves.

Screw the three door hinges between the wooden rack halves with the barrel of the hinges down so the two halves will fold flat.

    • 4
      Apply the padding.

Apply felt or foam to the rack at the points shown where the guitar will come in contact with the rack. You can either glue the pieces in place or use self-sticking material.

    • 5
Unfold the legs to provide a stable guitar stand.

Set up the rack with the legs unfolded at a 45 to 90 degree angle. Simply set the guitar on the rack.
