Make Papier-Mache Pulp (Crafts)

Papier-mache pulp is a terrific modeling material. Use it to make puppet heads, papier mache masks, beads, and other craft projects. The recipie here makes about 1 1/2 cups of pulp.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 bowls
  • scrap paper
  • boiling water
  • flour
  • saucepan
  1. Step 1

Fill a medium-sized bowl about half full with scrap paper torn into small pieces. You can use newspaper, computer printout paper, old envelopes, or any paper that isn't shiny.

  2. Step 2

Pour boiling water over the paper, so that it is completely submerged. Let it soak overnight until soft.

  3. Step 3

Meanwhile, measure 2 tablespoons of flour and put it into a small saucepan. Add 1/2 cup of water and stir until well blended. Cook this mixture on the stove, stirring constantly, for about 3 minutes, until it has come to a thick boil. Set aside to cool.

  4. Step 4

When the paper has soaked long enough, stir with a wire whisk or place in a blender (along with plenty of extra water) and blend on high for about 15 seconds. Gently squeeze out most of the water and place the paper into a clean bowl or other container. Continue this until all the paper has been reduced to pulp. Next, add the cooled flour paste. Mix well with your hands. The papier mache pulp is now ready to be used in your crafts project.
