Spinning the golf ball back like the pros do isn't a difficult task. Any golf ball that is properly hit already has backspin but how do you achieve the kind of backspin that causes the golf ball to suck back on the green?

Well, there are a few conditions that must be met in order to obtain tour-like backspin. First, the green itself must be receptive for significant visual spin to occur. That is, the green must be firm. -Not too soft and not too hard. Second, it helps if you are hitting into an up-slope on the green. Third, a headwind will also help. Fourth, a soft-covered ball and quality clubs with advanced grooves play a significant part. Lastly, striking the ball properly is a must. The steps below will focus on setting up to the ball and striking it correctly to achieve that jaw dropping backspin.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Golf Club
  • Golf Ball
  • Clean Lie
  1. Step 1

Address the ball by playing it slightly back in your stance.

  2. Step 2

Open the clubface slightly and aim the body a little left of the intended target.

  3. Step 3

Place the majority of your weight on the forward foot to promote hitting down sharply on the ball.

  4. Step 4

During the backswing, quickly cock the wrist and create a steep swing.

  5. Step 5

During the downswing, hit the ball first and uncock the wrist into the back of the ball. Maintain a straight left wrist through impact. It is important to hit the ball first and leave a divot in front of the ball.

  6. Step 6

Be aggressive through the shot. The harder you hit down on the ball, the higher the ball will travel and the more backspin it will have on it.

  7. Step 7

Through the shot, your swing thought should be to strike the ball first and to pinch the ball between the club and the turf and allow the ball to roll backwards up the face of the club which is how backspin is created.

Tips & Warnings
  • To add extra backspin on the golf ball, you need to hit down steeply on the ball.
  • Do not attempt to add extra backspin to a ball that is sitting down or is buried in rough. Grass behind the ball will negate the grooves and create more of a knuckle ball and send it further than desired.
