Curly hair can often be finicky and hard to style, especially if it is fine. It is also hard to keep the top section of the hair full of curl and body. However, with the right method of hair care and the right hair care products, styling your curly hair can be very simple.

The following is a general, but pretty fool-proof, guide for washing and styling your naturally curly hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Curl-defining or Moisturizing Shampoo
  • Curl-defining or Moisturizing Conditioner
  • Blow dryer
  • Diffuser
  • Hair Care Products: Mousse or Curl Defining Cream, Leave-in Conditioner, Hairspray, if needed
  1. Step 1

    1. It is always best to start styling your curly hair, right after you’ve bathed. Shampoo and condition your hair, preferably with a specialty curl-enhancing or moisturizing shampoo and conditioner set, (Let this be the last thing you do before leaving the shower).

  2. Step 2

    2. Upon time to rinse the conditioner out, turn off the shower, so that the water is coming out of the faucet instead of the shower head.

  3. Step 3

    3. Bend so that your hair is completely suspended in the air, and rinse the conditioner out while under the faucet. Keeping the root facing in this direction will help your hair have more lift at the top.

  4. Step 4

    4. After rinsing, keep your head turned over, and very lightly proceed to pat the excess moisture out, so that it’s not dripping.

  5. Step 5

    5. With your head still in the downward position, add some leave-in conditioner and finger-comb your hair (if your hair is badly tangled, brush it from the back of your head towards the floor before adding the product).

    6. With your hair still flipped over, scrunch it well, and then add your hair care product, being sure to distribute it evenly. Begin to diffuse your hair in sections.

  7. Step 7

    7. To achieve good body at the root of the hair on top and closest to the face, really focus on those sections at the very beginning.

    8. Diffuse your hair until it is almost completely dry. Not drying it completely helps your hair to be less likely to frizz.

  9. Step 9

    9. Flip your head back up, and allow your hair to settle.

  10. Step 10

    10. Work your fingers through your hair twisting and shaping any curls that don’t come out as desired. You may want to use a curl defining crème (lightly) or a small amount of pomade on the individual curls for a finished look

  11. Step 11

    11. Spray hair with a light to medium hold hairspray, if needed, to maintain the curl and body of your hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • A cold water final rinse can help give your hair more shine and body.
  • When you diffuse your hair, it's good to be in an open area with good ventilation so that there will be less overall humidity, meaning less frizz for your hair.
  • A medium heat setting on your blow dryer may work better for your overall curl finish.
