Step 1
Once there is a cigar type/brand that is of interest go to the box. Most all should be selected in a similar way.

Pick up several sticks and feel them. They should be flexible, soft, feel moist but not wet and some what spongy. Talk to the tobacconist. Ask what level the humidifier is set for, their opinions anything that gets to a good quality stick. The leaf shouldn't crackle under squeeze pressure. Choose a stick that feels nice and smooth and soft.

Step 3
Smell the cigar. It should be rich and not stale. Each cigar will have different scents but each will have a rich humid smell. The leaf should look smooth with no cracks. The feel should be similar to a very soft leather.

Make a choice on what feels, smells and looks enjoyable. Take time and realy find the best choice. It will be worth it.
