Things You'll Need:
- 9-Iron
- Golf Ball
-
Step 1
Use an iron for this chip shot. This is a long distance, uphill chip and a wedge will come up short. Depending on the the distance, anything from a 5-Iron through a 9-Iron will work. When you are playing just off the green or the fringe, the object is to get the ball onto the green quickly and rolling towards the hole like a putt.
-
Step 2
Address this chip shot by closing your stance and aiming your body lines to the right of where you want the ball to land.
-
Step 3
Aim the clubface where you want the ball to land. The clubface should appear closed since your body lines are aligned to the right.
-
Step 4
Identify your landing area taking into consideration the undulation of the green. Make a few practice strokes.
-
Step 5
Make a normal chip stroke through the ball and send the ball into the landing area. The ball should carry a short distance, hitting the landing area and then run out like a putt the remaining distance towards the hole.
-
Step 6
Because the clubface is closed in relation to your closed stance, the club will approach the ball on an inside-to-out swing path and the ball will be imparted with hook spin and will easily run uphill towards the hole. There will be no check spin on this one.
-
Step 7
Practice the shot using various irons and various degrees of green inclination to get a feel for how hard to hit each running hook chip and where to land the ball in each situation for the best results.
