While a lot can be said about the benefits of exercise for the body, regular workouts can sometimes aggravate acne. Acne starts with clogged pores. Exercise induced sweat combined with the natural oils in skin can block pores and result in comedones. The salt residues in sweat when left on skin for long periods of time can irritate it further and exacerbate the condition. Susceptible individuals can take a proactive approach to the problem by addressing the factors that may be contributing towards their exercise induced acne.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Wash your face before exercising. Sweat produced during the process of working out may interact with moisturizers and sunscreen on facial skin and result in clogged pores.

  2. Step 2

Avoid wearing makeup on face while exercising. Even a light dusting of non-comedogenic powder can turn into a potential problem when it mixes with sweat.

  3. Step 3

Wear loose fitting clothes in breatheable fabrics if you are prone to acne. Tight synthetic clothes can irritate skin and increase acne.

  4. Step 4

Shower and cleanse skin thoroughly after exercising. Use an exfoliating cleanser with alpha or beta hydroxy acids on acne prone areas to prevent breakouts.

  5. Step 5

Use wet cleansing wipes on the face if showering immediately after working out is not a possibility.

  6. Step 6

Change out of workout clothes as soon as possible to prevent body acne. Even if showering is not possible, wiping moisture with a clean towel, and changing into dry clothes will help in preventing the problem.

  7. Step 7

Maintain an acne fighting regimen that includes regular cleansing, exfoliation, and an antibacterial component. Consistent use of acne treatments is the only way to acheive clear, healthy skin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Blot skin to clean sweat at regular intervals during the workout session.
  • Avoid using harsh grainy scrubs! They can irritate skin and trigger acne.
