Step 1
If you happen to have all these items in your closet, then lucky you, you might just be a pirate.
If prefer to sew your costume Simplicity pattern 4923 is the perfect pattern to use to create your Jack Sparrow costume
Here are some suggestions of places to go to find what you don’t have in your closet :
Dollar stores: There you can find scarves, beads, feathers and rings super cheap. They might even have fake mustaches, hair and costume makeup.
Thrift Stores: For all your clothing pieces, especially the tall boots. Unless you plan to wear the boots again there’s no needs spending an arm and a leg . If you can’t find a secondhand pair you might want to hit the costume store. It’s better to buy some cheap costume boots for $20 than drop $100 or more on a nice pair you’ll only wear once.
Army Navy Stores: Look there for clothing especially a long blue vest or jacket with fancy buttons and a tri-corner hat.
Craft Stores: They will definitely have all the beads, feathers, scarves and buttons you’ll need.
Drug Store: Here you can find costume accessories like wigs, facial hair, makeup etc. for a lot less than regular costume stores -
Step 2
Jack Sparrow wears both a long red scarf on his head and a tri-corner hat. Unless you’ve found a hat that’s not big money, to avoid the expense of a real tri-corner hat and not look cheap in one of those felt ones from the costume store, just got with the scarf.
-
Step 3
Now, if you already have dreadlocks you are waaaaaaaay ahead of the game. Otherwise you are going to have to fake it with either a fake dread wig or if you‘ve got long hair here‘s a way to fake some dreads and still be able to take them out the next day.
Divide hair into 1” x 1” sections and braid up to wear the bandana will cover. And/or grab a lock and turn until it is twisted about halfway, up to where your hat will cover. Then, use a bristle brush, hold that piece of hair and brush it up toward your scalp. Twist that same piece again and repeat. Spray to hold in place.
You know Jack has loads of stuff in his hair like beads, feathers, coins etc. so go ahead and tie some onto your “dreads”. -
Step 4
Jack Sparrow’s a pirate so of course he’s got a lot of bling in his hair and on his hands.
Any rings will work for your costume, wear lots. -
Step 5
Jack wears a rather large white long sleeved shirt. It’s pull over, no buttons with drop shoulders. Now you could make a top from a pattern like Simplicity 4923, have someone custom make one for you, be lucky enough to find a “puffy” shirt at a thrift store or make one from a regular button down shirt.
Find a white long sleeve shirt at least 2 sizes to big. Unbutton it to well, as low as you‘d like. Leave the rest of the shirt buttoned. Remove the buttons from the unbuttoned portion of the shirt. Remove the collar from the shirt.
Take your iron on seam tape and iron the sticky side down around the edge of the neck where you’ve removed the collar Measure from the neckline to where the shirt is buttoned and cut two pieces that length. Iron the sticky side down to the sides of your shirt from the neckline to where it’s buttoned. Removed the paper from the back of the tape and fold to the inside of the shirt and press.
To create the puffy sleeve look use elastic bands at the shirt wrists or tie with some string -
Step 6
A Jack Sparrow Jacket and/or vest would be a great find at a thrift or Army/Navy store. But, if you aren’t fortunate enough to find one then, find a blue button down shirt in a heavier weight fabric that hits the middle of your hip.
Remove the sleeves and collar.
Turn under and finish the rough edge of the sleeves and collar as you did with the seam tape in step 4.
Now if you know how to sew a button and want to dress up your vest you could replace the buttons with silver or metal like buttons you can find at your local sewing or craft store.
To wear, leave the “vest” unbuttoned and cinch with both a leather belt and a long white scarf. -
Step 7
The Pants are really nothing special, just dark gray or black, not too tight or too loose. But, you should be able to tuck them into your boots. Sweatpants are always a good, cheap alternative.
-
Step 8
There is no good way to fake boots without them looking, well, fake. If you don’t have a pair of tall boots in your closet, try hitting the thrift stores first, then go for a pair of cheap costume boots.
-
Step 9
Facial Hair is a must to play Jack Sparrow. You’ll need a mustache and a goatee braided into two sections. Ad some beads if you like.
-
Step 10
Jack Sparrow also likes his eye makeup so eyeliner and mascara is a definite must.
Or, if you’d like to be the Cannibal Jack paint eyeballs on the backs of your eyelids by painting the entire eyelid white, then add a black dot in the middle and circle the dot with blue or green for an iris.
Then draw four more eyeballs down each cheek.
